Story
Elwood Curtis’ college dreams are shattered on a two-lane highway in Florida. He suffers the brunt of an innocent neglect and is sentenced to hellish imprisonment at Nickel Academy, a brutal penal institution lost deep in the Jim Crow South. He meets another parishioner who saw Turner through. The two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner offers survival advice, Elwood warms to his optimistic views. Against the backdrop of the emerging civil rights movement, Ellwood and Turner’s existence seems a far cry from the brilliant eloquence of Reverend Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s cruelty, Elwood strives to maintain his humanity, awakening a new vision in Turner.
